Local governments often make decisions that directly affect the programs, funding streams, and communities that nonprofits serve. From zoning rules and public health ordinances to grant allocations and housing policies, these decisions are shaped by local officials who need to hear from community-based organizations. Building relationships with these leaders is not just strategic—it’s essential. Nonprofits are on the frontlines of community impact, and their voices carry unique insight into the needs, challenges, and opportunities on the ground.

But navigating at the local level is sometimes more difficult or more intimidating than advocating at the state or federal level.  Each county and city shares information in different ways and local statutes may also be different.

Check out our Local Government Policy Guide for a step-by-step look at how to connect with your local elected officials and track local legislation.  This resource is designed to help nonprofit leaders navigate and influence local government—whether at the city council, county board, or municipal agency level.
